Parker District Retired Fire Chief Mitchell Taylor

Greenville

Mitchell Taylor, 77, went home to be with our Lord on Friday, November 16, 2012.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Esley and Mamie Barton Taylor.

He is survived by his loving wife Alice of 59 years who said, "It was 59 years of wonderful".

He was a loving Christian husband, dad and papa to his family. He always saw the best in others and will be remembered for his good sense of humor and the jokes he loved to share.

He was employed by the Parker Sewer and Fire Subdistrict in 1956 and promoted to Assistant Chief in 1975. Mitchell received the President's Citizenship Award at the Annual State Firemen's Association. He received numerous awards, but this award he treasured most since it is based on one's dedication and service to his department, community and state. He was politically active on behalf of the fire service and had lobbied for and against various bills in the State House. He was appointed to serve as co-host chairman of the 1990 State Fire Chief's Conference. He served as President and Secretary of the Greenville County Fire Chief's Association and co-director of the Special Purpose District's. He was a member of the Southeastern and International Fire Chief's Association. He retired as Fire Chief of the department in 1997.

He was a member of Leawood Baptist Church for 37 years where he formerly served as a Deacon and on other committees.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Gregg Holmes; his son, Michael Taylor; his granddaughters, Lindsey Brown and husband, Craig, and Haley Holmes; his great-grandchildren, Miley and Parker; brothers, Richard and Ronald Taylor; sisters, Nancy Hanks, Naomi Taylor, Elaine Turner; and a cousin, Randall Howard who was like a brother.

Mr. Taylor is at The Mackey Mortuary where the family will receive friends Monday from 12:30pm until 1:45pm with the funeral service at 2:00pm in the chapel with the Reverend Dr. David Yearick officiating. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Open Arms Hospice, 1836 West Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC 29680.

Online condolences may be sent to www.mackeymortuary.com The Mackey Mortuary.
