Thomas Garrett Obituary
Mauldin
Thomas Joel "Joe" Garrett, 96, of Mauldin, husband of the late Mildred Mullinnex Garrett, died May 29, 2013.
Born in Simpsonville, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Garrett.
Joe served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. Up until his death, he enjoyed corresponding with his Army buddies and their families. He worked for many years for Griffin Fuel Oil/Hardware and retired from Kellett Oil Company.
He was a faithful member of Mauldin First Baptist Church since 1934 where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Brotherhood Director and member of the Sonshine Fellowship.
He is survived by his daughter, Pat Sutherland and her husband, Henry, of Greenville; a granddaughter, Lynn Gurkin and her husband, Scott, of Simpsonville; a grandson, David Joel Sutherland of Greenville; and two great grandchildren, Chase and Peyton Gurkin.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his second wife, Lee Graves Garrett; a brother, Herbert Lee Garrett; and two sisters, Mary Tanner and Lillian Garrett.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Mauldin First Baptist Church, with a funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mauldin First Baptist Church, 150 S. Main Street, Mauldin, SC 29662.
