Thomas "Tom" Leecle Townsend


Thomas "Tom" Leecle Townsend, 80, formerly of 12 Welcome View Drive, widower of Rose Owens Townsend, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Henry Graydon and Helen Jones Townsend.

Mr. Townsend was retired from the United States Air Force and the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Hejaz Shriner's Provost Guard Unit, NARF, the American Legion, Brandon Lodge #279 A.F.M. and was a long-time familiar face at the Life Center. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Lynn Howe and husband, Larry, of Greenville; a granddaughter, Shannon Palmer and husband, Michael Willard, of Greenville; a brother, Beverly Lynn Townsend and wife, Elizabeth of Greenville; and long-time companion and sweetheart, Dorothy Wilkes and her family.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 18, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, West.

Memorials may be made to the , Upstate SC Chapter, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5000, Greenville, SC 29601 or Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

The family wishes to express thanks to Cindy Mullinax for her special care, the elite Columbia group at The Haven and to Hospice of the Upstate for their genuine care and concern.

The family will be at 12 Camelot Lane, Greenville.
