Travelers Rest
Helen Cooper McKinney, 87, of Travelers Rest, died in her sleep on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. She was born in Greenville, SC, to Elmer Leland and Kate Irene Ross Cooper.
She grew up in Travelers Rest, graduating from Travelers Rest High School, and earning a BS degree from Winthrop College in 1947. She worked at Duke Power Company for 25 years and was a substitute teacher in the high school for many years.
Helen supported many young people attending college and nurtured her family and friends. She was very involved in her church and community and enjoyed decorating, flower arranging, gardening, poetry, literature, and had a special love for cats.
She is survived by a sister, Marian Bryan and husband Bill, of Mill Spring, NC; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Cooper and her nieces and nephews and their families: Cathy Cooper and Robin Buhrke, Ross and Amber Cooper, Paige and Marc Windahl (Cooper), Erin and Steve Stalgren (Shea and Carsten), Ross and Mary Bryan (Ella), Joanne and Joe Pace, Libby and Ronnie Davidson, Ray and Catherine McKinney and Alex McNaughton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle McKinney, and three brothers: Leland, Robert, and infant Benjamin Cooper.
Funeral service will be held at Travelers Rest United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 1, with visitation afterwards in the church family center.
