Arthur Thomas Durham, husband of Myrtle Thames Durham, completed the last phase of his life on earth on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
Mr. Durham was born in Abbeville, SC June 26, 1917 and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was the son of the late Pleasant Robert and Cora Smith Durham.
In addition to his wife of sixty-nine years, Mr. Durham is survived by one daughter, Donna Patrice (Patty) Durham Lawton and her husband, Thomas Oregon Lawton II; one grandson, Thomas Oregon Lawton III and his wife, Dianne Marie Lawton; and one great grandson, Jonathan Thomas Lawton.
Mr. Durham began his military career with Southern Airways, in Camden, SC, before being transferred to the South Pacific during World War II. He was attached to the 35th Fighter Sq. and the 8th Fighter Group, then transferred to Air-Sea Rescue and stationed at Itami Air Force Base Osaka, Japan. He was discharged November 1946.
After leaving the military, he was employed by the Greenville-News Piedmont Company for almost 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, W. Frank Durham, Sr., Robert Earl (Big) Durham, Pleasant Burl (Lit) Durham, Fred Durham and one sister, Margaret Durham Brinegar.
Services will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 2pm at The Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, conducted by the Rev. Marty Price. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in the Serenity Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at The Mackey Mortuary one hour prior to the service and will be at the home of Oregon and Patty Lawton in Easley, SC.
