Chauncey Waldo Lever, 87, formerly of Greenville, passed away January 21, 2013. He was born October 11, 1925, in Enoree, South Carolina, to Reverend Waldo and Marietta Lever.
Chauncey attended The Citadel before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended and graduated from Wofford College in 1948, and in 1975 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by Wofford College. In 1949, he married Sara McMaster Cauthen, who passed away April 20, 2012. Last January, they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Chauncey was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and will be sorely missed.
A banker by profession, Chauncey also served in economic development, in higher education and in the railroad industry. During his banking career, he was with Florida National Bank for fifteen years where he became President of Florida National Bank of Jacksonville and Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Florida National Banks of Florida, Inc. (then one of the largest bank holding companies in the State of Florida, which later became part of First Union National Bank and then part of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.). He was a Director of the Jacksonville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and a Member of the Reserve City Bankers Association.
He was very active in professional and civic affairs throughout his life, including former President and former Chairman of the United States Industrial Council; Rotary member, director and officer for more than forty years; recipient of the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award; former President of the Southern Association of Science and Industry; former Vice Chairman of the Fund Campaign, United Way of Jacksonville; and Vice President of the (former) Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce.
He was very involved with Boy Scouts of America and served at various levels for more than three decades. He served on the Executive Committee of the Southeast Region Board of the BSA for many years and was the recipient of the Silver Antelope and the Silver Beaver Awards.
Chauncey was a member of the United Methodist Church and served in a number of local, district and conference leadership positions. He was a delegate to the United Methodist Church World Methodist Conference in Singapore. He served as a Director of the Florida Methodist Foundation, as a Director of Methodist Medical Center in Jacksonville, as a Director of Wesley Manor Retirement Village and as a Director of Florida Methodist Children's Home.
Chauncey is survived by his three children, The Reverend Rachel B. Lever of Palm Beach Gardens, Chauncey W. Lever, Jr. and his wife Martha of Jacksonville, and The Reverend Dr. Charles C. Lever and his wife Xiomara of Vero Beach, grandchildren Macaulay Lever White and her husband Marc, Zachry C. Lever, Charles C. Lever, Jr. and Chauncey Chapman Lever, great grandchildren Marc A. White, Jr. and Morgan M. White, brother William B. Lever (husband of deceased Joe Ann Lever), and their children and grandchildren, brother-in-law Dr. Charles E. Cauthen, Jr. and his wife Hazel, and their children and grandchildren, and many other loving family members.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Southside United Methodist Church, 3120 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, Florida 32207, with a reception immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside United Methodist Church.
