Clara McWhirter Cooper


Clara McWhirter Cooper, 93, widow of the late William Dufae Cooper, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. She was born February 7, 1921 in Pacolet, SC, the daughter of Edgar Pierce McWhirter and Macie Jane Bolin McWhirter. Mrs. Cooper retired in 1984 as district manager of the Wrangler Stores of the apparel division of Eckard Drugs. She had previously worked as a buyer for Ivey's Department stores in Asheville, NC, Greenville, SC and Charlotte, NC for 15 years. Upon retirement, she volunteered at Meals on Wheels for 15 years and at St. Francis Hospital in the chaplain's office for 22 years, having been named volunteer of the year in 2006. Mrs. Cooper was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, where she had served in numerous volunteer positions since 1969.

Mrs. Cooper is survived by a son, Kenneth "Ken" Errol Cooper (Vicki) of Greenville, and a

daughter, Penny Kay Cooper of Greenville. She also is survived by a sister, Dorothy Macie McWhirter Pardue of Lancaster, SC and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth McNabb McWhirter of Summerville, SC and numerous nieces and nephews, including Sydna McWhirter Wylie of Greenville. She was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Clyde Star McWhirter, Folis McWhirter, Harold Pierce McWhirter, Edgar Paul McWhirter, Willie Dee McWhirter Cauthen, Margaret Louise McWhirter Morris, Horace Bee McWhirter and Foy Spencer "Tee" McWhirter.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 in the chapel of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, 200 Buncombe Street, Greenville, SC 29601.

The family would like to thank all of Mrs. Cooper's friends who have supported her over many years, especially those of the Buncombe Street Church family and her caring neighbors at McDaniel Heights Condominiums.
