Joseph Guy Cothran, Jr. passed away on March 6, 2014. Born in Millville, Florida on June 27, 1926, he was the oldest son of the late Reverend Joseph Guy Cothran and Mary Louise Riley Cothran. He graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, the Banking School of the South at Louisiana State University and the School of Bank Administration at the University of Wisconsin.

Joe (also known as "Big Daddy") referred to his 4 children and his 13 grandchildren as "the joy of my life." He always called his wife of 60 years, "the love of my life." His love for his family will continue to shine on despite his physical absence here on earth. He'd want to be remembered as a man who loved his Lord, his family and his church, and his community.

Joe was a committed follower of Jesus Christ and served faithfully as a deacon, teacher, and church leader at First Baptist Church of Hartsville and was founder and first Chairman of the intercessory prayer ministry at Earle Street Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne Glenn Cothran; one son, Joseph Guy Cothran III (Jan) of Asheville, NC and three daughters, Kathryn Cothran Dority (Ken), Mary Cross Cothran Schaefer (John) of Marietta, GA, Patricia Cothran Pfister (Bill) of Greenville; and thirteen grandchildren; sister, Virginia Ramsey (Carl) of Manning; two brothers, John C. Cothran (Jeanette) of Greenville and Riley Cothran (Marga) of Miami. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas D. Cothran, David E. Cothran, and William A. Cothran.

He served with the Bank of Hartsville in Hartsville, SC from 1961 until 1991 as Cashier, Senior Vice President, and President.

Active in civic affairs in Hartsville, he was organizer and Chairman of the Hartsville Downtown Development Association, First Chairman of Pee Dee Regional EMS, Founding member of Darlington County EMS, Trustee and Finance Chairman for McLeod Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at Earle Street Baptist Church located at 225 West Earle Street, Greenville, SC 29609. The funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 PM. There will be a private burial following the service.
