Bobby "Bob" Lee Harper, 82, husband of Goldie Turner Harper for 62 years, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 22, 2014.
Mr. Harper was born on August 2, 1931 in Beckley, West Virginia, to the late Dorsey Harper and Edith Cole Harper. In West Virginia, he played minor league baseball and was a big supporter of the West Virginia Mountaineers football team. Bob was an active member of Mauldin First Baptist Church, where he was a greeter, R.A. Boys Leader, and a former Deacon. Bob retired from Piedmont and U.S. Airways and moved to Mauldin in 1982. He served on the Mauldin Planning Committee and was a community-minded person. Bob was a mason and a member of Empire Lodge 213, where he served as treasurer of the Lodge. He was also a member of the American Legion. He was an active member of the Hejaz Shriners, where he was a member of the Greeters Unit and served as President of the Southeastern Greeters Association. He served as a Potentate's Aide for several Potentates. Bob was a big worker for Shriners Hospital and had earned his 100,000 dollar bar to his Crown of Honor for his services to the hospital and to the Hejaz Shriners. He loved to play golf and was a member of the Hejaz Seniors Golf Association and the Luncheon Club. Bob was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Army in 1953 as a medic.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Linda Durham (Joel) of Taylors, and Sharon Harper of Mauldin; a son, Roger Harper of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Glenna Underwood of West Virginia; a brother, Jimmy Harper of California; eight grandchildren, Audrey Smith, Michelle Rex, Roger Harper, Jr., Joel Durham II, Crystal Detamore, Johnny Detamore, Roger Eric Harper and David Harper; and eight great-grandchildren, Zackary Morris, Eric Pitchman, Haylea Morris, Brandon Smith, Sydnie Morris, Meghan Smith, William Harper and Bentley Harper.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mauldin First Baptist, officiated by the Rev. Dr. L.E. Williamson. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Graceland East Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for two hours prior to the service.
