Lillie Fuller Simonsen, 90, widow of Dr. David R. Simonsen, resident of Wesley Commons, died Sunday, April 6, 2014.
Born in Greenwood, SC, on October 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles C. Fuller, Jr. and Lillie May Bailey Fuller. She was valedictorian of her Greenwood High School Class of 1940, and graduated cum laude from Furman University in 1944 with a major in economics and a minor in French. After graduation from Furman, she accepted a position with Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. In Rochester, she met Dr. Simonsen, a research chemist at Kodak. Married on May 17, 1947, they raised five children in Rochester. In Rochester, she was active in their church and in many community organizations, receiving numerous awards for her volunteer activities. After Dr. Simonsen's retirement, they moved to Greenwood in 1985. They were active at First Baptist Church, where she served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and was active in her circle and other group activities. She participated as a member and in leadership roles with Daffodil Garden Club, Keowee Study Club and L'Alliance Francais. An accomplished pianist and composer, she started piano lessons at five years of age, studying at Lander College and then continuing her studies at Furman. She provided music to a multitude of audiences such as NGO meetings, services at Wesley Commons, patients at National Healthcare and other facilities, and accompanied many singers, including her brother who was a professional singer, the adult choir at First Baptist, and high school students trying out for musicals. Hymns she wrote have been performed at First Baptist.
Surviving are her five children: Karen Ward and husband Elliott of Rockvale, TN; Kathy Wallace of Asheville, NC; David Simonsen and wife Vickey Verwey of Richmond, VA; John Simonsen and wife Mary of Johnson City, TN; Laurie Cuddington and husband Donald of Columbus, OH; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 10:00 AM in Asbury Hall at Wesley Commons, with Chaplain Carol Peppers Wray and Dr. Tony Hopkins officiating.
