Melle Elizabeth Kirkland Rizer of 3906 Country Club Road, Denmark, South Carolina died peacefully at her son's home in Greenville, South Carolina surrounded by her immediate family and caregivers on April 7, 2014.

Born September 4, 1923 in Ulmer, Allendale County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John Eldon and Annie Lou Dickinson Kirkland. Melle was educated in the Allendale county public schools and Blanton's Business and Finishing School in Asheville, North Carolina.

She worked for 30 years as the Deputy Registrar of Bamberg County for the Department of Health. Melle served on the Board for the Aging of Bamberg County. She was an active and dedicated member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Olar, South Carolina for many years. When she moved to Denmark she joined Bethel Park United Methodist Church. She was President of the Mispah Reunion and was an active participant there.

For seventeen years Melle served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Denmark Country Club. In her honor, the Board created the Melle Rizer Service Award for outstanding service to the club. She loved to sit in a rocking chair on the screened porch of the Rizers' river houses and watch the waters of the Edisto River flow. She was Secretary/ Treasurer of the Charles Pinckney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Melle participated in many church and civic endeavors.

She loved to play bridge in the many clubs in Denmark. Melle enjoyed working in her gardens designed by the late Robert Marvin of Walterboro. She loved to entertain, and her home in Denmark was the scene of many beautiful parties throughout the years. During the 80's and 90's she helped her son cater events and parties in the Greenville area and was an accomplished baker Melle was the consummate , Southern hostess, a loving mother, devoted wife, and doting grandmother. She was a trusted and loyal friend to many.

Melle Rizer is survived by her son's Donald E. Rizer of Greenville, South Carolina, Corey Franklin Rizer(Williene) and beloved grandson Kirkland Lee Rizer of Bamberg, South Carolina. She is also survived by a brother, the Reverend Harold N. Kirkland of Sumter, a sister, Evelyn Kirkland Roberts of Charlotte, North Carolina and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Maxwell Earle Rizer, her parents, John Eldon and Annie Lou Dickinson, her brother, John Eldon Kirkland of Allendale, her sister, Rae Kirkland Sibley of Fairfax, South Carolina, and her beloved mother-in-law, Baine Freeman Rizer of Olar, South Carolina.

The funeral service will be held at the Bethel Park United Methodist Church in Denmark, South Carolina at 3:00 P.M. on April 10, 2014 with burial to follow in the historic Mispah United Methodist Church cemetery at Bufords Bridge, South Carolina. Out of town guests and relatives are invited for lunch at the home, 3906 Country Club Road, Denmark, S.C. from 12:00P.M. until 2:00P.M.

The family would like to thank Karis Health Care and her caregivers who provided excellent comfort and care to Melle.

The family will be at the home, at the residence in Denmark from 5:30 to 7:30P.M., on April 9, 2014.
