William Howard Deily


William Howard Deily of Greenville, SC, formerly of Covington, LA, died April 9, 2014. He was 95.

Deily was born in 1918 in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated from Penn State with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During WWII he served in the Signal Corps and the U.S. Air Force and after completing his military service, he worked at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia designing missile tracking systems. In 1956, he accepted a position as an engineer with Boeing Aircraft in Melbourne, FL. During his career with Boeing, he also lived in Seattle, WA and Covington LA and worked on Minuteman, BOMARK and Saturn V rockets and participated in projects related to America's first moon landing.

Throughout his adulthood, Deily was an avid bicyclist, competitive sailor, ham radio operator and gardener. He was also a talented wood worker, and during the course of his life, he built four sailboats, including a trimaran.

He was a charter member of the Southern Yacht Club in Mandeville, LA, where he raced his own boats as well as Flying Scots.

Deily was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville, SC, was the area treasurer of St. Vincent de Paul Society and was a member of numerous ham operating clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jackson Deily of Greenville, SC and New Orleans, LA; his children, William Howard Deily, Jr. of Carriere, MS, Brenda Deily Constan of Atlanta, GA, and Michael James Deily of Salt Lake City, UT; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mary Elizabeth Deily of Zubulon, GA, State College PA and Covington, LA; a sister, Frances Deily; and a brother, Richard Deily.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mandeville Cemetery in Mandeville, LA on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 58 Progress Parkway, Maryland Heights, MO 63043-3706.
