Mary Ellen Henderson Burns
Mrs. Mary Ellen Henderson Burns, 93, widow of Troy Burns, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 3, 2014.
Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Archie League and Cora Julian Henderson. Mary retired from Southern Bell after 42 years of service. She was a business office supervisor and past president of the Telephone Pioneers. She was an outgoing person who loved her family, friends, and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mary was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and a long time former member of Triune United Methodist Church. Mary was a substitute Sunday school teacher and enjoyed serving as a lay leader. She also served as chairperson of the administrative board.
Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca B. Nix (Michael) and son-in-law, Rando Clark, all of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Robert K. Clark of Easley, Kimberly C. Brock (Toby) of Belton, and Kelli N. Wallen (Justin) and Erin N. Berryhill (Josh), all of Greenville. She was the proud great-grandmother of Nolan and Anna Clark, Emily and Andrew Brock, Peryn Wallen, and Grady Berryhill. She is also survived by sisters, Helen H. Traynham and Rachel H. Christy (Clyde), all of Greenville.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Jane Burns Clark, four brothers and three sisters.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to those who served in a caregiver capacity during her final days: Judy Lea, Amanda Davis, and United Hospice of Simpsonville. The family would also like to thank Dr. Johnson, Upstate Cardiology, for the many years of care and compassion as Mrs. Burns' Cardiologist. Deepest appreciation to Lynn Swayngham and Frances Gilstrap for their many expressions of kindness throughout the years.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in the Downtown Chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, with visitation prior from Noon until 1:15 p.m. Burial to follow the service in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 306 North Franklin Rd., Greenville, SC 29609.
