Thomas Grady Chappelear

Greenville

Thomas Grady Chappelear, 86, of Greenville died Wednesday, May 28, 2014. He was the husband of Janelle Chappelear.

He was born in Greenville to Floyd and Zora Cobb Chappelear.

Tom was employed by GMAC for 33 years. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church for over 64 years. He served as Chairman of the Deacons, Sunday School teacher, and was the chairman of various committees.

Tom was a Boy Scout Master Leader for 16 years, Troop #199 and served in the United States Air Force during WW II.

He served on the national, state, and local School Boards for 22 years. He was the Chairman of the Greenville County School Board, President of the SC State School Board Association, President of the Southern Regional School Board Association and served as a Director of the National School Board for eight years. He was a Board Member of Greenville Technical College, and Chairman of BEST.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by daughters, Gail Keck (Peter) of Cashiers, NC, Gina Woodson of Greer, sons, Greg Chappelear (Jody) of Easley, and Glenn Chappelear (Donna) of Acworth, GA; grandchildren, Mitch Chappelear, Peter Keck (Tanya), Allison Germano (Chris), Laura Ballard

(Mark), Caroline Keck, Thomas and Leigh Woodson, and Hannah, Rachael and Caleb Chappelear; great grandchildren, Landon & Leela Keck and Peyton & Addison Ballard. Tom is also survived by sister Rachel Muraview of Piedmont; and brother Harold (Billie)

Chappelear of Annapolis, MD. He was preceded in death by sisters Sarah Brandt and Mary Townsend; and brother Millard Chappelear.

Visitation will be at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Downtown Monday June 2, 2014, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 1:30. Memorials may be made to Sportsmen's Outreach, 6018 Fords Lake Court, Acworth, GA 30101 and Welcome Baptist Church, Chiller Fund, 2730 Anderson Rd., Greenville, SC 29611
