Samuel P. Vause Sr.


Samuel P. "Sam" Vause, Sr., 86, husband of Mary E. Vause, passed away in Greenville, SC, on July 2, 2014, after an extended period of declining health. He retired in 1995 as president and general manager of Caraustar Corporation's Dixie Waste Paper Company. Born in 1927 to Agnes Puette (d. 1994) and the Rev. Joel Vause (d. 1962), he grew up in Leaksville (now Eden), NC. After serving in the Army during WWII, he came to Greenville in 1948 where he helped start the paper company, participated in the Civil Air Patrol, became a troop leader for the Boy Scouts and played trombone in the Civic Band. He married Theresa Mikell (d. 1970) in 1954 (sons Sam Vause, Jr. (Brian Haug), Joel Vause and Daniel Vause (d. 1988)). In 1971 he because the proud father of a blended family when he married Mary E. Sofield (son David Sofield and daughter Deb Sofield). A resident of Paris Mountain for more than 40 years, he recently moved to an assisted living facility. His first love was flying; he used his mechanical engineer training as a creative carpenter, electrician and plumber. He was for many years a lay speaker for The Gideons; for the past decade he was an emeritus board member of Miracle Hill Industries. In addition to his surviving children, he is also survived by a sister, Marie Austin of Roanoke, VA, and grandsons Christopher, Zachary and Joshua Sofield of Reidville, SC. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 3rd, at St. John's Baptist Chuch, 2 Groveland Drive, Taylors, SC. The family members are at their respective homes.
