Jean Summey Cordell

Rock Hill

Jean Summey Cordell, 92, of Greenville, SC, died peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Morningside Assisted Living in Rock Hill, SC.

Born in Brevard, NC, she was the daughter of the late Terrell Baxter and Annie Henry Summey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James L. "Jimmy" Cordell.

Mrs. Cordell was valedictorian of the 1938 graduating class of Paris High School. She was a graduate of Brevard Junior College and Asheville College. Mrs. Cordell was the recipient of numerous drama awards and medals during her college career.

Mrs. Cordell's teaching career spanned 34 years. During her 30 years at Paris Elementary, she was named Teacher of the Year in 1978. She was an active member of Piedmont Park Baptist Church, The Crescent Music Club and the Retired Teacher's Association.

Mrs. Cordell was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher and friend. With her sense of humor, kind spirit and giving nature, Mrs. Cordell touched many lives.

She is survived by daughters, Myra Bagnoli (Emilio) of New York, NY, Carol Lovelace (Tom) of York, SC; grandson, Jon Bowman (Alyssa) of Charlotte, NC, granddaughter, Emily Bowman of York, SC; great granddaughter, Ava Baker of York, SC; sister Ruth S. Dacus of Greenville; and many special nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by, brother, Harold Baxter Summey; and two sisters, Matilda "Tilly" Neal, and Martha S. Landreth.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 25, 2014, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown from 11:45 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. with the funeral service to follow in the downtown chapel at 1:30p.m. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside for their kind and loving care.
