A.L. Curtis, 84, died on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at his home.

Born March 16, 1930, he was the son of the late A.L. Curtis and Bertie Phillips Curtis.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Turner Curtis; two daughters, Leigh Senn Weymer (Bill) of Flat Rock, NC and Charlotte Lux of Gaffney; a son, Jim Curtis (Kelly) of Gaffney; five grandsons, Shane Senn (Sarah) of Clemson, Steven Lux of Gaffney, David Lux (Shauna) of Inman, Brett Curtis of Gaffney and Daniel Fegter of Gaffney; three great-grandchildren, CJ Senn and Gabe Senn of Clemson and Madeline Bays of Inman. He was predeceased by a son, Bill Curtis. The family would like to give special thanks to caregiver Harriett Byrd for her dedicated care for A.L. and family over the last year. The family would also like to thank Marie Cribb and Hospice Care of S.C.

A.L. attended Duke University, graduated from Furman University, and received a Masters Degree from Clemson University. He played professional baseball with the Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators organizations. He coached football, baseball, and wrestling at Daniel High School, Pickens High School, and Gaffney High School. He served as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Gaffney High School.

Mr. Curtis was a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir for more than thirty years.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Buford Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda McNatt and Dr. M.B. Morrow Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be former coaches and players associated with Coach Curtis.
