Rev. Kenneth Mendal Newton, 83, of 2020 Edwards Lake Road, died October 12, 2011 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
A native of Osborn, South Carolina, son of the late Frank and Julia Athalie Chaplin Newton, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired pastor and a member of Washington Baptist Church, where he was Pastor Ameritas.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Parris Newton of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Janet Newton of Hartsville, Phil Newton of Greer and Frank and Regina Newton of Liberty; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Ray Haskins of Statesboro, Georgia; one brother, Rev. Douglas Newton of Travelers Rest; two sisters, Barbara Thomas and Athalie Lacey; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Rev. Newton was predeceased by his first wife, DeAlva Donaldson Newton, second wife, Lucille Groce Newton, three brothers, Fred Newton, Roy Newton and Nelson Newton, and one sister, Beatrice Gukeisen.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Washington Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Drew Hines and Rev. Douglas Newton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at The Wood Mortuary.
