Max McGee Rice

Max Rice, 83, died on May 6, 2012 at 10:55pm in Colorado Springs, surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be held at Northgate Baptist Church, 633 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC on Thursday, May 17th at 4:00pm. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30pm to 3:50pm on the same day. (A service was also held in Colorado Springs.)

Mr. Rice was born in Belton, SC on August 19, 1928. He graduated from Furman University in 1949, served in the Air Force, and went on to become Vice President of a family business, Rice Mills.

He married Vivian Barker of Charleston, SC on February 18, 1956. In 1960, in order to devote himself to full-time Christian ministry, he resigned his Vice Presidency and sold his interest in Rice Mills to "seek first the Kingdom of God…" In 1965 Max & Vivian founded Look-Up Lodge Christian Retreat Center. Max served as Executive Director and principal Bible teacher of Look-Up Lodge for 30 years. He authored four books on Christian living and has served as president of Christian Camping International/USA, vice president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, president of the S. C. Baptist Brotherhood, chairman of trustees of Anderson College, member of the Executive Board of the S. C. Baptist Convention, deacon and Sunday school teacher at various Baptist churches.

His family remembers him most for his devotion to God and to his family, his integrity, and his wonderful sense of humor. He is also remembered for his wit and practical illustrations in his Bible teaching.

He is survived by his sister Eunice Rice Horton; his children Tim & Vivian Ann Wilson, Carolyn Rice, and Brad & Eunice Bardin; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Vivian Barker Rice.
