Howard Gilchrist Obituary
Abbeville
Dr. Howard Tawney Gilchrist, Sr., 91, of Abbeville, died August 3, 2012 at the Hospice House in Greenwood, SC.
Born in McKeesport, PA, he was the son of the late Howard Thompson Gilchrist and Myra Corrine Tawney Gilchrist.
Surviving Doc Gilchrist is his wife Martha Elizabeth West Gilchrist of Abbeville and their six children; Caroline Gilchrist McGee (Glenburn) of Abbeville, Shirley Gilchrist Knight (Jim) of Columbia, Howard Tawney Gilchrist, Jr. (Emily) of Indianapolis, IN, Mary Burns Owens (Hugh) of Bowling Green, KY, Dr. William J. Gilchrist (Shelley) of Hodges, SC, and Tawney Gilchrist Gavin (Brian) of Aiken; fifteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Gilchrist and Dorothy 'Dolly' Gilchrist Sherer and a half-brother, John Elmer Gilchrist.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh as a Doctor of Dental Surgery, he practiced in Williston, SC, for over 40 years. Upon retirement he and wife Martha moved to Abbeville, SC. He was affectionately known as Budd, Doc or Poppy to family and friends.
A celebration of Doc's life with military honors will be 11:30AM Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Abbeville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. John Keith officiating. The family will have a reception following the service in the Christian Life Center. Interment will be 12:00 Noon, Friday, August 24, 2012 in the historic Long Cane Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander St., Greenwood, SC 29646; Abbeville First Baptist Church, PO Box 825, Abbeville, SC 29620; Long Cane Cemetery Fund, PO Box 549, Abbeville, SC 29620; or a charity of one's choice.

Budd was a wonderful father, a loving grandfather and absolutely the best father-in-law. I was fortunate to have known him and to have shared many happy occasions with him. He will be missed but never forgotten.
