Mary Evelyn Gooddy McCrary, 91, widow of Lowell Wallace McCrary, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012.
Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Horace Frierson and Mildred Beatrice House Gooddy.
Mrs. McCrary was the first cellist to earn a Bachelor's degree from Furman University. She was a cellist in the Greenville Symphony Orchestra for 40 years, Foothills Symphony, and played in the Berea First Baptist Symphony. She was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church where she was a director of weekday kindergarten for many years. She also taught music lessons privately and in the public school system.
Surviving are two daughters, Elaine McCrary of Charlotte, NC and Laurie Morgan of Greer; a son, Norman B. McCrary and wife Dee of Greer; five grandchildren, Keith McCrary, Jennifer Bright, Jessica Morgan, Emilie Long and Bradley Long; two great grandchildren, Ava and Gavin and a sister, Laverne Welchel of Lyman.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. A Memorial Service will follow in the Downtown Chapel at 12 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville Humane Society, 305 Airport Rd., Greenville, SC 29607.
