Robert McAlister, Sr.

Greenville

Robert McAlister, Sr., 92, of Welcome Community, died Monday after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Westminster in 1920, he was the son of the late Warren A. and Sara Etta Singleton McAlister. He was married to the late Tessie Johnson McAlister for 70 years.

Mr. McAlister served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Elizabeth Stanton. On October 29, 1944, he received a written commendation from the commanding officer for his "highly commendable" service during dangerous amphibious landing operations on the beaches of St. Tropez in southern France.

He worked at Judson Mill and coached little league and pony league baseball at Welcome Elementary School. He loved baseball and the Gamecocks. Mr. and Mrs. McAlister were faithful servants for the Lord at Tanglewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Carol McAlister of Columbia; granddaughter, Denise Pendarvis of Columbia; six great grandchildren, Brittany Cox, Taylor Stevens, Laken, Chase, Matthew and Jason Blackwell; sister Joyce Breazeale; and brother Jack McAlister.

He was predeceased by siblings Clint, Kenneth, Alfred, Mae McAlister Smith, Elsie McAlister Turner.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. The funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Northwest Chapel with The Reverend David Osborne officiating. Entombment will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorials be made to Tanglewood Baptist Church, 2801 Old Easley Bridge Road, Greenville, SC 29611.

The family thanks the wonderful caregivers at Lexington Extended Care Center for their devotion to Mr. McAlister.
