Ruby Clary Glenn, 95, died Monday, Oct 15, 2012 at the Chestnut Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing home. Mrs. Glenn had moved to Suwanee, GA, from Greenwood, SC, to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was born on Aug 9, 1917, in Newberry, SC and was the daughter of the late Matthew Wills and Eva Bouknight Clary. She was a graduate of Newberry College where she was a member of the Newberry College Singers. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Chancel Choir. Mrs. Glenn and her twin sister played the violin in the high school orchestra. She moved to Greenwood, SC in 1936 where she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church and joined the choir there. At the church, she became secretary to the minister, Dr. Robert L. Alexander, for 10 years.
While her two children were growing up, she began a lifelong hobby of playing bridge. Eventually, she became an accomplished player and gave lessons to friends and family. She entered bridge tournaments and earned some master bridge points. Another activity she enjoyed was growing camellias and exhibiting the blooms in flower shows. She won many ribbons over the years. During the 1970's, she began art classes in watercolor under the direction of Ruth Martin. Then she attended art classes at Lander College in Greenwood and studied under Dr. Alan McTaggart where she painted in oil and acrylic. She exhibited and sold her paintings in SC and in New York City at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in Greenwich Village during the 1980's. She was accepted in the show after her daughter had three of her paintings juried at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. Mrs. Glenn is a former member of the Azalea Garden Club, Woman's Club, and McKisseck Club in Greenwood.
Mrs. Glenn is survived by her daughter, Elaine Glenn Verdol of Suwanee, GA, and her son, James Dallas Glenn of Marietta; granddaughter and husband, Elizabeth Glenn and Brett Faulkner; grandson and wife, Jonathan and Joy Glenn; Dr. Lori Verdol Smithson of Midlothian, VA; great grandchildren, Jordan and Jarod Glenn; Kate and Anna Clare Faulkner; niece and nephews, Eve Price and Alan Powell of Columbia, SC; Steve Price of Charleston, SC; Clary Powell of Orlando, FL and Grayson Powell of N.Y. City; Don and Andrea Clary and families of Columbia, SC; and close friend, Brenda Brown of Blue Ridge, GA.
She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar Dallas Glenn; her son-in-law Dr. Joseph A. Verdol; her twin sister, Ruth Clary Price; her brothers, Matthew Wilson Clary, Benjamin Owen Clary, and James McVey Clary.
Funeral services for Ruby Clary Glenn were conducted on Oct. 19, at McDonald Funeral Home by Dr. James Dwiggins. Interment was at Sawnee View Gardens.
