George Wirron Willis, age 96, a lifelong resident of Laurens passed away March 16, 2013, at the Agape Senior Assisted Living Center.
Born in the Greenpond Community, he was a son of the late John Mell and Lonnie Scott Willis. As a part of the "greatest generation," Mr. Willis served in the US Army during World War Two and saw extensive action in the Pacific theater of operations.
After graduating from Spartanburg Junior College and earning additional degrees from the University of North Carolina School of Banking, and Louisiana State University School of Banking, Mr.Willis was employed by the Palmetto Bank and he worked there until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. Willis always had a smile on his face and kind word for whomever he might meet. He was devoted to his wife and his family. The oldest of 5 Willis children, he was considered the patriarch of the family after his father's death. He loved spending time with family at their Lake Greenwood cottage and spent many happy hours with loved ones boating, skiing and fishing. Mr. Willis was also devoted to his church, First United Methodist Church of Laurens, SC where he served many years singing in the choir and volunteering on numerous committees.
He is survived by a daughter, Wanda Willis Pedersen and her husband, Thomas A. Pedersen; 2 grandsons, Thomas A Pedersen, Jr., his wife Crystal; and Edward C. Pedersen, his wife Kimberly; 3 great grandchildren, Madeline Kaye Pedersen, Tyler Bryce Pedersen and Ethen Joel Pedersen. Mr. Willis is also survived by a brother, Rev. Dr. Mason McLauren Willis, and a sister, Linda Willis Wallace.
Mr. Willis was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Madeline Kellett Willis; two brothers, Carlyle Willis and Melmuth Scott Willis, and a sister, Elizabeth Willis Allen.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Alice MacKeil and the family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church, 244 W. Main St., Laurens, SC 29360.
