George Funderburk Obituary
Greenville
George Norwood Funderburk, 71, passed away Sunday morning, March 24, 2013 after a brief illness.
Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Claud Sapp and Frances Norwood Funderburk.
George was a graduate of the former Asheville School for boys, Furman University and received his J.D. in law from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was a private practice attorney for 30 years and was a commissioner for 6 years with the S.C. Workers Compensation Commission. He was a proud lifelong Democrat who worked in numerous local, state and national campaigns. He served as a legal aide the U.S. Representative James R. Mann from 1968-71.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann Downen Funderburk, of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, John Downen and Elizabeth Funderburk of Washington, DC; and their children, Jackson Sapp Funderburk and James Bennett Funderburk; a brother, Claud Sapp Funderburk and his wife, Kathryn of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to Celebrate his Life will be Wednesday, March 27 at 4 pm at The Mackey Mortuary. The family will receive friends following the service at Riverbend Club House.
Memorials may be made to McCall Hospice House, 1836 West Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC 29680.

George will be missed. He was a contributor to our community and a good friend to my dad, Louis. Both men were steadfast in their support of Furman basketball and taught me a thing or two about hoops and loyalty when I was a kid.

In today's world of conflict it is nice to remember a friendship with someone about whom I never ever had a negative thought at a time when we were in national politics and not exactly playing marbles. George to me truly was a prince of kindness and I was so happy when he married Ann, a former colleague on a U.S. Senate staff. George, Ann and I truly went to the well together and it mostly was so much fun.
