The Guest Book is expired.
Joy Bates Shackleford passed away on April 22nd, 2013 surrounded by her children.
She was born in 1934 to Samuel Daniel Bates and Velma Tyner Bates.
She is survived by daughters Kay Tibbetts, Samantha Van Atta, and Kerry Shackleford; grandchildren Erin Moran Knox, Ryan Moran, and Blake Van Atta; and great-grandchildren Ella Colquette and Rennes Knox.
She was a lifelong educator and student, with multiple advanced degrees and an accomplished career in the South Carolina education system, having taught everything from kindergarten music to collegiate-level psychology. She was an avid traveler with rich memories from multiple trips throughout Europe, which fed her love for art, music, and other works of beauty. Her greatest joy was nurturing that which grows, from her garden, to her pets, to her children, and her strongest legacy will be instilling the desire for constant challenge, improvement, and creativity in those she knew.
There will be a memorial service at The Woodlands at Furman (1500 Trailhead Court, Greenville SC 29617) on Sunday, April 28th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, the National Wildlife Federation, the American Humane Society, or any animal welfare organization of personal preference.
