Dorothy Davis Brooks

Greenville

Dorothy Davis Brooks, 99, of Greenville, passed away July 3, 2013, at The Cascades at Verdae Retirement Community in Greenville, South Carolina. Dorothy rejoins her beloved husband of 72 years, William Earl Brooks, who preceded her in death on August 2, 2007, and their cherished dog "Fella." A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on July 20, 2013, at 2:00pm at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Dorothy was born on October 8, 1913, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Carl Edward Davis and May Bell Jackson Davis. Her father was a longtime employee of Southern Railway in Atlanta and played minor league baseball. Dorothy was very close to her older brother, Joseph Jackson Davis (m. Elizabeth Cherry), an engineer and graduate of Georgia Tech.

Dorothy graduated from Girls High School in Atlanta, Georgia, and later attended the Atlanta Branch of the University of Georgia for two years. Dorothy and Earl married in 1935 and settled in Augusta, Georgia, where Dorothy served as executive secretary, and later Executive Administrative Assistant, to Owen Cheatham, founder and Chairman of the Board of the Georgia Pacific Corporation. In 1953, they moved to New York City when Georgia Pacific relocated its headquarters there. Dorothy and Earl retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they enjoyed life until Earl's passing in 2007.

Dorothy and Earl were inseparable companions. They especially enjoyed playing golf together which they did on a weekly basis into their early 90s. Dorothy was uncommonly gifted with finances and handled her own affairs until the age of 97. She learned how to use a computer in her early 90s and kept in touch with family and friends via email for many years. Dorothy and Earl, who were members of All Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head, were very generous with their resources to family, friends and charities too numerous to mention. Following Earl's passing in 2007, Dorothy moved to Greenville and enjoyed watching her great, great nieces and nephews in their various activities.

Dorothy is survived by nephew James Jackson Davis (m. Evelyn) of Newnan, Georgia; niece Judith Davis Turnipseed (m. Tom) of Columbia, SC; nephew Earl Glover (m. Suzanne) of Winder, Georgia; niece Gail Lindstrand (m. Bud) of Portland, Oregon; great-nephew Dodd M. Davis (m. Joy) of Greenville, SC; great-nephew Jefferson Davis Turnipseed (m. Cyndy) of Columbia, SC; great-niece Paige Davis Mathis (m. Michael) of Chattanooga, TN; and great-niece Jeny Turnipseed Mathis (m. Gil) of Atlanta, Ga.; and 10 great, great nieces and nephews, including her namesake Brooks Davis (10), and Zac (18), Gunnar (9) and Tate (7) Davis; Madeline (13) and Sam (10) Turnipseed; McCay (17) and Jackson (14) and Davis (12) and Elliot (10) Mathis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head Island, 151 Gumtree Road, Hilton Head, SC 29925, or All Saints Episcopal Church, 3001 Meeting St., Hilton Head, SC 29926.

The family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Linville memory care unit at The Cascades at Verdae, who provided loving care and companionship during Dorothy's time in Greenville.
