Marilyn Baker

Marilyn Jarvis Baker, 90, formerly of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, widow of Philip Schaffner Baker, died Friday, October 18, 2013, in Greenville, South Carolina.

Born September 16, 1923, in Oak Park, Illinois, to the late Albert Eugene and Bertha Waldner Jarvis, she grew up in Elmhurst, Illinois. She later attended the University of Illinois, graduating with highest honors. In 1944 she married Philip Baker, whose work in chemistry and teaching took them to Texas, Wisconsin, Vermont, Illinois, and eventually Oak Ridge. She moved to Greenville in 2004.

Marilyn was active in her church and community and was an Oak Ridge Hospital volunteer for 50 years. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed music, ballroom dancing, growing roses, and working crossword puzzles. She was known for her special love of children and her devotion to her family.

She is survived by her three children, Ross Baker (Barbara) of Morristown, TN, Jean Greer (Richard) and Susan Mickelwait of Greenville; six grandchildren, Jennifer Baker, Philip Baker (Ashley), Carolyn Baker Hall (Andy), Christine Greer O'Connor (Kevin), Catherine Greer Merrifield (Matt), and Laura Greer; and five great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express its heartfelt thanks for the loving care and support provided by Marilyn's devoted, long-term caregivers, Judy and Mary, and for the compassion and dedication of her many hospice nurses and aides.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the MUSC Foundation, designated for the Carroll Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Lab, MUSC Department of Neuroscience, 173 Ashley Ave., BSB Room 403, Charleston, SC 29425, or to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
