Monty DuPuy Obituary

Monty DuPuy

Greenville

Monty DuPuy, husband of Miriam Evans DuPuy, died peacefully at the Woodlands at Furman on December 6, 2014.

Son of the late Edward Lorraine and Tenny Mae Bishop DuPuy, he was born on July 24, 1929 in Tampa, Florida and grew up in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He graduated from the Ben Lippen School and attended Asheville-Biltmore College (now UNC-A).

In a broadcasting career that spanned over forty years, Monty got his introduction to radio in Atlanta, GA, and then worked at radio stations in Asheville, NC. In 1949, he and Miriam moved to Greenville, SC where he became an on-air announcer at WFBC radio and subsequently WFBC-TV, later WYFF-TV. He was best known in television as the weather anchor and as the host of the live daily children's show, Monty's Rascals, along with Stowe Hoyle as Mr. Doohickey.

During the 1960's and 1970's, he was the morning radio voice of the Upstate. He was the the host of "Monty in the Morning" on WFBC before leaving in 1977 to pursue station ownership of WGXL-FM with his partner, Gene Phillips. In 1980 the station was sold, and the new owners renamed it WSSL. He then formed the multimedia production company, Sound Editions, producing commercials and videos.

In 2002 he received the Masters Award from the South Carolina Broadcaster's Association in recognition of outstanding lifetime achievements in broadcasting.

Despite a busy work schedule, Monty always found time to give back to the community. His special passions were the Salvation Army, the Kroc Center, and Meals on Wheels. He and his wife Miriam delivered meals for Meals on Wheels for over 37 years. In 2007 they were recognized as South Carolina Governor's Volunteer Family of the Year, and they were runners up for 2010 National Volunteer of the Year Award. Monty was actively involved in his church, Travelers Rest United Methodist Church. A gifted teacher, he taught Sunday school classes for over 50 years.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by daughters Margot Stewart (Jim) of Greer, Mary DuPuy Jennings of Simpsonville, and Melissa DuPuy of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Matthew Jennings, Elizabeth Howerton, and Mary Glen Double of Greenville, Kate Williams (Matt) of New Orleans, LA, and Austin Jennings of Brooklyn, NY; step-granddaughters Catherine Haskell (Matt), and Marge Connor (Jim) of Greenville; and great grandchildren, Thomas Double, Rivers Haskell Dorton, Gram Haskell, and Olivia Connor.

The family wishes to thank the memory support staff of the Arboretum at the Woodlands for their kind and gentle care of someone we loved so much and to Regency Hospice for their special care at the end of his journey.

A celebration of Monty's life will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Travelers Rest United Methodist Church, 19 South Main Street, Travelers Rest, SC. The family will receive friends after the service.

The family asks that instead of flowers, memorials be to Meals on Wheels, 15 Oregon Street, Greenville, SC, 29605; or to the Salvation Army Christmas Fund, 417 Rutherford Street, Greenville, SC 29609.

Like most kids in the 60's and 70's who lived anywhere near the TV station, I had a chance to be on Monty's Rascals.. I will freely admit that I was afraid of Stowe Hoyle's character..I think the beard scared me. But, I do remember, fondly, the show and Monty Dupuy. And, it was also the first time I had eaten ice cream from one of those cups that included the wooden paddle. In 2014, my father went to Hospice of the Upstate. My mother, who remembered my fear of Mr. Doohickie, told me to go to the nurses station, where I saw a photo of Stowe Hoyle. Apparently, when his wife was sick, Mr. Hoyle not only volunteered there, but did so long afterward. So, though I was never afraid of Mr. Dupuy, and even tried to talk to him when I saw him buying socks at McCalister Square, my fear of Mr. Doohickie evaporated when I saw that he was just as kind of a soul as Mr. Dupuy always appeared to me. Wonderful memories of childhood...and Mr. Dupuy was a huge part of them. Condolences to the Dupuy family...and to all the children who loved him.

I;m sorry about coming on here so late but just now found this. I talked with Monty several years ago next to where he use to work. But I was on his show a couple of times in the 1960's with him and Mr. Doohickey. I can still see hime till this day. Monty was a very nice man, easy to talk with. It really must have been an honor to have such a wonderful person in your life.

Reading through all of these messages truly continue to make me smile. I never considered life without grandaddy in it. I knew his contributions, knew his legacy, but to me he was just my grandfather. It continues to amaze me months later all the love and support we have received. Thank you all.

I have some very fond memories of Monty in my youth and recently we were reminiscing about his morning radio show at work. I can remember hearing him offering a "John Deere lawn mower for $50 call 242-1234". I miss the simplicity of that era. I also want to send my condolences to Melissa and the family and let them know that his memory will live on. Jim Rohrer

Monty went to school with my Mother, was a neighbor and good friend to her family for many years. He and his brother will be forever remembered in the Black Mountain area. You don't have to look far to see Ed's photography or to hear a native talk about Monty's Rascals. Even I remember them. We pray for the family to have peace. God Bless you all.

Mr. Dupuy made Greenville and the entire upstate area a better place for everyone. I knew him personally when I was a kid because my dad, Johnny Wright, worked closely with him at WFBC TV and radio. He was always gracious and kind and he will be missed. My deepest condolences to the family.

I was told of Monty's passing by a church friend in Roswell, Ga from Greenville who grew up listening to Monty on radio and TV

Monty and I worked together and WWNC Asheville many years ago but I remember him fondly as a truly great person and Christian friend.

I extend my deepest sympathy and warm wishes to Miriam whom I remember fondly as well from the Asheville days.

May you and your family be cheered by the memories of the good times and comforted by the love of God, family and friends.

The Jennings and Gresham families extend their deepest sympathy to Mr Monty's beloved family. Anybody from old Greenville who was anybody was a Monty's Rascal. It was a memorable part of our childhood. We were lucky to have Margot as a friend and fellow Greenville High classmate and to get to know this fine, supportive family. They are the type who were and are the backbone of Greenville. Thank you Mr Monty for your well lived life that mattered to so many. Rest in peace thy good and faithful servant.

To the Family - Monty will always be a special part of Greenville. I have many fond memories that I couldn't begin to share all of them - but the one that comes to mind quickly was the many times he was the voice of God at our church (Augusta Heights) Easter/Christmas productions. May God's love and grace give you comfort.

Mr. Dupuy was truly an icon in our town. A very kind man to children, he always made you feel important. I remember being on his show fondly, and if you were lucky enough to be on Monty's Rascals, you came away from it feeling like you had been a part of something special. I hope to see you and "Mr. Doohickey" again in Heaven one day. Rest with the Lord. You have served us all well, my friend.

My siblings and I were on Monty's Rascals three times (1961-62). My parents always had Monty on our car radio as they drove us to Taylors Elementary School. I have been in radio in Charlotte for 36 years. Monty was one of my heroes in the business. I was able to hear his morning show in Charlotte on FM in the 1970's until he sold WGXL. I also watched his weather reports on WLOS. He was so nice to call me at my home in Charlotte after I wrote to him telling him how much his programs meant to me. Melissa, I remember hearing you play "Rocky Top" on one of his radio programs. You did a great job. All of us will miss Monty.

Monty DuPuy, ran into him a couple of times a week while working with Frank Turner in the stations, Art Department, before Computer Graphics. Hot pressed many a price on ads for camera shot like for Horne Ford. Very nice guy, really 'Good People,' to chat with and the same personality on the radio and interviewing children on Kid's Korral/Monty's Rascals TV show in public life! Never forget that distinguished radio voice! Our Condolences to the DuPuy family and Our Deepest Sympathies in this time of sorrow. May He rest in Peace.

The last time I saw Mr. Monty was a couple of years ago. My friend Jeff Bannister has an office right beside Monty's, and I enjoyed a 20 minute conversation about how much he meant to me, having loved Monty's Rascals in the 60's and listening to his morning show during the 70's when FM was just catching on in a big way. He was so kind and humble that day. When James Irwin and I had EDGE Magazine in Greenville in 1991, we put Monty and Mr. Doohickey on the cover in an article called "Remembering Rascals," and I remember Monty loving it. I will never forget this gentleman, a true legend of broadcasting who inspired me to be a radio announcer for years prior to moving into print journalism. My sincere condolences to the family. Rest in peace Mr. Monty.
