Alfred Mentzer Obituary
Greenville
Alfred Jerome "Jerry" Mentzer, 75, of Greenville, died Sunday, January 31, 2016.
Born in Wheeling, WV, in 1940, he was a son of the late Albinus J. and Mary M. Thomas Mentzer.
Jerry completed his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University and received an MBA from Bowling Green University. He had a 30 year career in engineering at Union Carbide "Amoco". Additionally, he was a Merlin-Excalibur level magician in the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the founder of Magic Methods, Inc., and wrote over 40 books about stage and close-up magic. He had a love of magic, sports (Go Bucks!), history, space, and his friends and family. Jerry is remembered as a guy who looked out for others and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by two daughters, Marykay Mentzer, and Barbara Greene of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Hattie Branch, Maisie Greene, and Emma and Charlie Antenen; a brother, Lawrence E. "Larry" Mentzer (Leone) of Louisville; and nieces and nephew, Lesley Osborne, Lynn O'Connor, and Luke Mentzer.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the International Brotherhood of Magicians, an organization in which Jerry was a long-time member. Donations to the Endowment and Development Fund of the International Brotherhood of Magicians "EDF" can be made online at http://www.magician.org/resources/ibm-endowment-and-develoment-fund or mailed to, 13 Point West Boulevard, St. Charles, MO 63301-4431. Checks should be made payable to IBM - ED Fund.
