Chick Wilson Obituary

Wilson, Chick W.
Gerald (Chick) Wilson died on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home in Greenwich, CT.
Chick graduated from Lincoln High School, Ellwood City, PA. Afterwards to Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, graduating in 1955. He did graduate work and taught at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN and received his MA in English in 1959.
Deciding on teaching as a profession and wanting to move east, he became an English teacher at the Roosevelt School in Stamford, CT. His next job was at Brunswick School in Greenwich. From there he went to teach at Wilton High School in Wilton, CT. He spent the rest of his teaching careers there until his retirement in 1992.
Chick's great interest and hobby was the music of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. From the age of 14, he started collecting records of the big bands and singers, especially Frank Sinatra. Later, he became the 'go to' person for people wanting information on the music of the era. He also enjoyed giving talks to local groups.
Gerald Warren Wilson was the youngest son of George W. and Lola McClintock Wilson. Two sisters and two brothers predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Barbara nee Roberts, and his daughter Clare Wilson both of Greenwich, CT, his sister, Sylvia Wilson of Monroeville, PA, Elaine Wilson and 11 nieces and nephews.

Chick will be missed. He always had 1001 anecdotes to share about music, films, literature, and pop culture in general. Jazz record collectors would come from as far away as Japan to scour his collection when he lived in Cos Cob.
From one Ellwoodian to another, I can appreciate how far he came from the mill towns of Western Pennsylvania.

Dear Barbara, Elaine, and Claire,
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you at this difficult time of loss. Jick was an important part of my life as I was growing up. His record collection, in Ellwood City at the time, was an enjoyable infulence on my music. I spent hours listening to old 45's and even 78's.
He also took me to see plays at the Red Barn Theater which I really liked.
It's good to know that his mind is once more clear.
Love,
John and Margie Smallfield
