Savona, Josephine
Josephine Savona of Greenwich, Connecticut, died on August 29. She was 79 years old and died peacefully after a long illness.
Josephine Anne Murphy was born on December 28, 1933 to Philip and Margaret Murphy of Greenwich. The youngest of nine children, she was raised in a humble home by her parents, first-generation immigrants from Ireland. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father a farrier and an accomplished bulldog handler. She developed a love of sports at an early age and spent her youth playing baseball, swimming in Greenwich's waters in the summer and skating on the town's frozen ponds in the winter. She worked at American Cyanamid (today known as Cytec) in neighboring Stamford for many years.
It was a chance visit to a Stamford restaurant called Savona's that led to her meeting owner Salvatore C. Savona, whom she married on August 5, 1967. They settled down in Stamford, where they raised two boys and lived for some 30 years, making lifelong friendships. Josephine spent time as a waitress, and then as a nanny when her own boys were grown. She and her husband retired to Deerfield Beach, Florida, in the late 1990s and later returned to Connecticut to be closer to their grandchildren. Her husband died in 2009, a loss from which she never fully recovered.
In addition to her husband, Josephine was pre-deceased by her siblings Mary Murphy, Peggy McGlynn, Danny Murphy, Patricia Smith, Dennis Murphy and Esther Burns.
She is survived by her son David Savona and daughter-in-law Manuela; her son Carey Savona and daughter-in-law Alison; grandchildren Max, Piper and Luca, sister Kathleen Murphy and brother Philip Murphy, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and a host of loving friends.
There will be no calling hours. A mass will be held at Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich at 10:30 am on Thursday, September 12. Burial will follow immediately at Saint Mary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Josephine's name to the Lewy Body Dementia Foundation at www.lbda.org/
