Tony Ziluca Obituary

TONY GARIBALDI ZILUCA, 80, passed away Saturday May 15th after a six month battle with cancer. He was born in Greenwich to the late Joseph and Josephine Garibaldi Ziluca on September 26, 1929. Tony was the great-grandson of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the liberator of Italy. A lifelong resident of Greenwich, Mr. Ziluca will be remembered for his gregarious personality and love of life. He was a willing adversary whether he was trading on Wall Street or racing sailboats on Long Island Sound. As a child of proud Italian immigrants his early years were spent at St. Mary's Elementary School (on Greenwich Avenue), Admiral Farragut Academy and New York University where he graduated college. Mr. Ziluca served in the US Navy from 1951until 1956 where where he was a Mine Warfare Officer and served during the Korean War. During his final year of service Lieutenant Ziluca was chosen to compete for a spot in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics in the Finn dinghy class. Mr. Ziluca began his 23year career on Wall Street with Bache & Company just before he married the mother of his five children, the late Nancy Hogan of Greenwich CT. He embraced his role as a floor- broker the same way he approached a sailboat race. He was a tenacious competitor and a compassionate friend. When he retired in 1981 he had risen to Sr. Vice President and head floor broker. An accomplished sailor and avid ocean racer Mr. Ziluca joined Indian Harbor Yacht Club in 1947 making him the second longest standing member. His sailing accomplishments, too numerous to quote, span from Frostbite Championships to Newport-Bermuda Races. He was also a member of both the New York Yacht Club a longtime member of the Storm Trysail Club. In his later years, Mr. Ziluca was also a part-time resident of Nantucket MA and Aspen CO where he indulged his passions for sailing and skiing. Tony is survived by his brother Paul Ziluca of Winchester VA and his five children: Francesca Decker of Lexington KY, Alessandra Piro of Wenatchee WA , Peter Ziluca of Santa Fe NM, Antoinette Silvey of Greenwich CT , Gina Ziluca of Albuquerque NM and twelve grandchildren. He was married to the late Jeannie Renchard of Darien, CT & Aspen CO for ten years. In 2004 he was predeceased by his wife of 15 years Malinda F. Ziluca of Greenwich & Fort Worth, TX. A memorial reception will be held on Friday May 21st at 4:00 PM at Indian Harbor Yacht Club, 710 Steamboat Road Greenwich CT 06830. A private burial is planned. Tony was, by far, one of the most interesting and fun people I have known. Always generous. I frequently think about our time spent together with Malinda and John (ex-husband) in Aspen, Greenwich and Nantucket. His 70th birthday party, surviving Hurricane Edward in ACK-so many fond memories! He was the life of the party!

Many great memories of Tony as one of the racing crew of "Julie" from Indian Harbor in the 50s, 60s and into the 70s. We had a lot of fun, didn't we?
All good wishes to his daughters and family from the Campbells.

To all his wonderful daughters I knew so well, I extend my warmest sympathies for the passing of a guy with such a wonderful past. As you know, I could never beat him frostbiting at IHYC, so I took him on as my foredeck boss on Tursiops (with Nancy as Navigator). Many great times together!

Dearest Tony... to so many wonderful memories and to such a wonderful stepfather...I was standing in downtown Zurich when I heard the news of your passing and through the tears I could hear your laugh and felt your smile and then found a smile from within and held a toast in your honor...a toast to you from Zurich... nothing but the best would do. I love you so much and treasure all the memories, Kim

My Dad Ed du Moulin, who passed away in 2006 at age 91, was a partner of Tony at Bache & Company years ago, and shared the passion for sailing and skiing. Dad had a high regard for Tony. The du Moulin family pays their respects,

Paul, to say that it's a small world doesn't do it justice. Your daughter, Tony's neice, married my son, another STC member and the arc continues. I am so sorry.
