Donald Townsend

Townsend, Donald L.
Donald Louis Townsend, Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on March 12th at the age of 88. He was born in Rochester, New York on May 15, 1925, the middle son of Noel and Donald L. Townsend, Sr. He graduated from New Trier High School and Northwestern University, both of the Chicago, Illinois area. Upon graduation from Northwestern he entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Headquarters of the 88th Infantry Division in Northern Italy where he supervised G.I.s and Italian civilians who were responsible for maintaining peace with Tito's Yugoslavia after WWII. Don met the love of his life, Marjorie Lowry, before leaving for the Army. Upon return they were married, a marriage that lasted 66 years. Together they raised four children, eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His family was a source of great joy and pride. This love was given and received with very much happiness to and from his in-law children and grandchildren. He is greatly missed.
Following his commitment to the Army, Don spent 22 years in the Consumer Products Industry with Union Carbide Corporation and The Borden Company. He spent the rest of his career in the Telecommunications/Computer Products and Services Industry with GTE Corporation and Quotron Systems Incorporated. After 45 years as a Sales and Marketing Executive, Don retired and joined Greenwich Research Associates.
Don was a committed member of his community. He was an active congregant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Riverside where he served as Vestryman, co-chaired the Fair For All fundraiser, headed up the ushers group and served as chairman of the Stewardship Committee for several years. As a resident of Edgehill in Stamford, CT, Don was elected President of the Resident Council. Many may not know this about Don but he had a beautiful singing voice and sang as a young boy in the choir at his church in Rochester, NY and later sang with the Greenwich
Choral Society.
Don has been a member of Innis Arden Golf Club for more than 50 years where he loved competing in the games of tennis and paddle tennis and enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with other members.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie Lowry Townsend, and four children: Donald L. Townsend, III, Elizabeth Bennett Townsend, Madeleine Townsend
Mandelbaum, Stephen Randolph Townsend, his eleven grandchildren and three great grand children. He will be greatly missed by all of us who have loved him.
