Hazel Sargeant Obituary

HAZEL MARIE SARGEANT, nee Sparks, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009, at the age of 99 years. She was a well-cared for resident of Nathaniel Witherell skilled nursing facility for several years preceding her death. Hazel was born September 6, 1910 in New York City. She moved to Greenwich in 1916 and lived there until her death on September 28, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her son, Donald. Hazel devoted a life-time of volunteer service to advance equality and diversity in matters of education, health care, and fair housing. On September 7, 2009, she was presented with a proclamation by the Selectman of Greenwich in honor of Hazel's volunteer service. She is survived by her sons, John and Geoffry, daughter, Gail Butler, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenwich Scholarship Fund (designate public housing resident) or The Nado Fund, a scholarship fund at Nathaniel Witherell skilled nursing facility in Greenwich. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 4 from 4 to 7 pm at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich. Services and burial will be private.

Hazel was like a grandmother to me. I will always cherish the times I spent with her. She was such a kind and loving person. She will be greatly missed!
