Stella "Steph" Maguire, 93, formerly of Greenwich, Connecticut died Friday, December 14, 2012 at her home in Pittsfield. Born in Greenwich, Connecticut on January 24, 1919 in the "Flat" on LeGrande Avenue to Nicholas and Barbara Chayka Zatorsky. She graduated from Greenwich High School and then Secretarial School and was employed as a secretary at Conde Nast publications. She studied the Ukraine language at the St. Basil's in Stamford, Connecticut. Stella worked as a secretary for a few years before marrying John Henry Maguire, Jr. on July 15, 1939. They were married 64 years when Mr. Maguire died in November of 2003. They were communicants of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside, Connecticut and she became a communicant of St. Mark Parish when she moved to Pittsfield to live with her daughter, Jean. Stella lived a great life. During WWII she was Air Raid Warden for our area in Greenwich, going around the street to make sure the curtains were drawn. She was also a spotter for Air Planes and Submarines along the shore of Long Island Sound at Indian Harbor, and she brought her 3 kids in the carriage down to the docks so she could do this. Stella or Steph as she was called in the neighborhood looked after kids on the street because their mothers were working. Steph worked for the Town of Greenwich for 25 years as a school foods head cook at North Junior High and then Eastern Junior High. She retired at age 62 and the Town gave her a grand retirement party at the Bush-Holly House in Cos Cob. Steffie and John had 3 children: John "Jack" Maguire who predeceased her in June 2012; Richard George Maguire who predeceased her in March 1993; and Jean Elizabeth Haywood with whom she resided in Pittsfield. She is survived by Carolyn Maguire, Jack's wife. Steffie is survived by her grandchildren: George and wife Denise Haywood of Peru, Garrett Haywood of Pittsfield, Pamela and husband Hans Broecking of Danbury, CT, Peter and wife Kim Maguire of Springdale, PA, Joseph and wife Karen Maguire of Southbury, CT, Kelley Maguire of Greenwich, CT. She is also survived by her brother Nicholas and wife Marillyn Zatorsky of Port St. Lucy, FL and sister Olga Hirshhorn of Naples, FL. She leaves 7 great-grandchildren, Sarah McFalls, Lillian Haywood, Garrett Haywood, Jr. of Pittsfield, Wilhelm and Warrick Broecking of Danbury, CT. and Hannah and Joseph Maguire of Southbury, CT. FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be no calling hours. The funeral services for Stella B. Maguire will be held Thursday, January 24th, 2013 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside, CT. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Maguire may be made to Gallaudet University, 800 Florida Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002-3695. Her son, Jack, graduated from Gallaudet University in 1966. The WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201 is in charge of arrangements.
