William Arthur Phillips, 88, of Greenwich, CT, passed away on March 27 at 7:00 pm
A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, April 4th, at the Second Congregational Church of Greenwich.
William "Bill" Phillips was born in 1925 in Providence, Rhode Island. He served in the United States Marine Corps from August 1943 through April 1946, seeing combat in the Pacific theater. He graduated AB from Brown University in 1950, and earned a LLB from the University of Connecticut Law School in 1954. He was admitted to the CT and NY Bars. He practiced law privately in NY and CT, was an attorney at Greenwich-based Hirschberg, Pettengill & Strong and was a partner in Moore, Phillips & Duncan (formerly Moore, Phillips, Hull & Duncan) of Greenwich.
He was an Honorary Member of the Executive Committee of the CT Bar Association, and member of the Anti-Trust Trade & Regulation, Federal Practice, Business Law, and Litigation Sections. He was a member of the Litigation and Business Law Sections of the American Bar Association, and practiced before the US District Courts of Southern & Eastern NY and CT, the US Court of Appeals Second and Third Circuits, and the US Supreme Court.
A resident of Greenwich since 1984, he became a member of the Greenwich Rotary Club in 1969, served as Club President in 1997-1998, and in later years oversaw the rewriting of the club's by-laws and constitution. He loved skiing, cycling, opera, gardening.
He is preceded in death by his former wife of 29 years Patricia Blewer. He is survived by his sister Mirium Clayton of Epping, NH, daughter Pamela (Richard) Noonan of Chatham, NJ, granddaughters Kendra and Brooke, and his partner of18 years Mary Anne Cline.
