George Hall Obituary

Hall, George E.
George Everett Hall Sr., beloved father, grandfather, and brother died on Sunday June 15th 2014 after a very brief illness. He was at home in Riverside Connecticut surrounded by his family. He was 88 years old at the time of his passing. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen by 5 years.
Born 1925 in Charleston, West Virginia, George was the son of Harry William Hall, and Margaret Buchanan Ford Hall of Beckley, West Virginia. George had one brother, David Lynn Hall, who died in 2003, and one sister, Anne Hall Elser, who currently resides in Greenwich, CT.
Mr. Hall served as an infantryman in the 78th Lightning Division in Berlin, Germany from 1944 to 1946 at the end of WWII. A 1948 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of West Virginia, Mr. Hall went on to study at Harvard Law School and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1951.
While at Harvard, Mr. Hall met a student at Wellesley College named Helen Babcock, and his life changed forever. They were married in October of 1951 and were married for 58 years before Helen passed away.
Upon his graduation from Harvard Law School, Mr. Hall joined the law firm of Sullivan and Cromwell in New York. He worked there for 7 years before leaving to join the Campbell Soup Company in Camden NJ. He served as Asst. Counsel for 3 years, before he joined the SCM Corporation, head-quartered in New York City. He joined SCM as General Counsel and Secretary, and stayed with the company for 25 years before retiring in 1986 as Senior Executive Vice President. He was responsible for strategic planning, corporate development and acquisitions. He also was a Director of the company.
Mr. Hall was a long-time member of both the Harvard Club in New York, and Riverside Yacht Club. He was also a long-time member of St. Paul's Church in Riverside, CT. He had a life-long hobby with electronics and ham radios, and used the call signal W1TPK for more than 60 years. He also had a passion for learning a variety of languages, and over his lifetime he became proficient in German and French. For the past 20 years he has studied the Mandarin Chinese language.
George and his wife Helen shared a special passion for traveling the world, tending to their rose gardens and reading. Together they travelled to China three times, Turkey, the South Pacific, New Zealand, and many other countries. George and Helen also shared a passion for opera and were long-time patrons of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Mr. Hall is survived by his three children, George Hall Jr. (wife Donna) of Granite Bay, CA, Beth Hall Johnson (husband Andy) of Brookfield, WI, and Annie Hall Ellis (husband Dean) of Bloomfield, MI. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Hall Elser of Greenwich, CT, his sister-in-law Mrs. Henry Nash Babcock of Old Greenwich, CT, 7 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service is planned for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Riverside, CT on Friday June 27th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to one of the following organizations: St. Paul's Church of Riverside, CT
