He was President of the Silver Shield Foundation and served as Chairman and Executive Director since its inception in 1982. The Foundation is an organization founded by George M. Steinbrenner, III and James E. Fuchs to give financial assistance towards the education and support of children and widows of Police Officers, Firefighters and State Troopers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police Officers and other law enforcement officers who are killed in the line of duty. He was an Olympic medalist and world record holder in the shot put. He was a husband, loving father of seven children, seven grandchildren successful businessman and a loyal friend to countless people he touched. Beyond his many accomplishments, he will along with his friend, George Steinbrenner will be fondly remembered for the way that they touched the lives of police officers and firefighters in the tri-state area. As a result of their efforts, hundreds of children of police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty had their educational expenses paid by the Silver Shield Foundation they founded in 1982. It is said that a man dies when his reputation dies. Jim Fuchs' reputation will live forever in the heart and minds of his family as well as the families of the police officers and firefighters he helped over the decades. That work continues with the Silver Shield Foundation." My dear sisters from "another mother' (well at times, maybe from the same mother, yours and mine!!!) Please know my arms wrap around you all now and hold you as you walk through this difficult journey. Step by step and day by day, I hope you find your feet will fall a bit more easily as the memories of a remarkable man take root and grow strong in your hearts, miraculously replacing the void sadness leaves in us all when our heros leave us on our own to actually execute the lifetime of lessons they have taught. Scary as that is, they have taught us well...have faith in that. I look forward to being with you on the 29th & 30th, celebrating the life of your Dad, the man who fathered my best friends and the husband of my 2nd Mom!! I love you all!
