Audrey Achelis Platt, April 22, 1915 - October 2, 2012
Mrs. Audrey Achelis Platt of Greenwich, Connecticut died peacefully surrounded by family at Greenwich Hospital on October 2, 2012 at the age of 97. She was the daughter of Helen Bruff Achelis and Frederic George Achelis. She attended the Greenwich Academy and Miss Hall's School. She discovered her talent for oil painting during a year of study in Florence, Italy; she served as a nurse's aide at Greenwich Hospital during The Second World War; and she was active in the Green Fingers Garden Club of Greenwich. She loved gardening, dancing and sailing. She and her husband were avid golfers at The Round Hill Club. She was also a member of The Field Club and a former member of The Belle Haven Club. She created delightful vacation homes in St. Croix and North Stonington. Reading was a constant passion to the last day of her life. Predeceased by her husband Frank Hinchman Platt II, she is survived by her daughter Deborah Platt Sterling, also of Greenwich, Connecticut, her sons Richard Booth Platt and his wife Diane Graham Platt of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, and Jeremy Bruff Platt and his wife Sondra Louise Murphy of Palo Alto, California; her sister Gertrude Scherman of Scottsville, Virginia and her husband E. Sykes; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her Greenwich area grandchildren are Robert Livingston Sterling, William Lee Sterling and Cameron Platt Sterling. Her other grandchildren are Richard Booth Platt, Jr., Huntington Woods, MI; Anne Platt Barrows, Philadelphia, PA; Matthew Summers, Arlington, VA; Katherine Elsa Platt, Davis, CA; and Samuel Francis Platt, Boston, MA. Services will be held Saturday, October 13 at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenwich, 254 East Putnam Avenue, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that individuals consider donations in her memory to one of the organizations she held dear: The American Red Cross, The Greenwich Library, or The Greenwich Hospital.
