Charles Claghorn III

CHARLES CLAGHORN, III - Of Cocoa Beach,FL. Charles Eugene Claghorn III, a retired accountant and author, died on Sunday, October 30, 2005, at age 93. He was born in Narberth, PA, on Dec.12th,1911. Graduated from Pierce college in Philadelphia and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Claghorn was an accountant for the Interpublic Group in New York City. A resident of Riverside, CT. since 1950, he moved to Cocoa Beach, FL in 1978 and in 2002 to Merritt Island, FL. Gene, as he was called, was a descendent from a long line of composers and songwriters. He wrote the Biographical Dictionary of American Musicians and Composers and the Dictionary of Jazz and books on the American Revolution. His first book, The Mocking Bird, was reviewed in the TIME magazine on May 24, 1937. Gene was the author of many other musical and historical books. He was a past president of Brevard Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and past National Governor of the Honorable Artillery Company, USA - a hereditary society. A member of the Optimist Club. He was also a member of the Society of Cincinnati, Founders and Patriots, the Colonial Society of Pennsylvania. His loving wife of 63 years, Eileen, survives him with their two sons, LT. Col. Charles of North Las Vegas, NV and Thomas of Milford, CT. Granddaughters, Melissa Smith and husband Clark of Rapid City, SD and Jennifer of Henderson, NV; two great-grandchildren, Colten and Kylee Smith of Rapid City, SD; and a brother, Donald of Vero Beach, FL. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, November 3rd at Riverside Presbyterian Church of Cocoa Beach.
