George Williamson Obituary

Williamson, George H.
Our beloved George Harold Williamson passed away peacefully at his home in Greenwich, CT Tuesday afternoon March 26th with his wife, Sue Ann, at his side. George will be lovingly missed by his sons Jesse and Thomas Williamson, his daughter Emily Williamson Friedman and her husband, Ethan Friedman, his step-daughters, Vaughn Massey and Lee Massey Heekin, her husband Jim Heekin and his grandchildren, James and Gray Heekin.
He was born April 2, 1945 in Rock Island, IL. He was a graduate of Iowa State University and The Wharton School of Business. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served at staff headquarters in Long Binh. His banking career began at Chase Manhattan in 1971 and concluded at JP Morgan Chase where he managed Traders of US Treasury securities in New York, London, and Japan. Following his 30 years in the financial markets, George made an unusual career shift. He returned to school and received a degree in Physical Therapy from New York University. Most recently he worked with patients at The Rusk Institute and as a therapist in a private rehabilitation facility in NYC. He found it rewarding to be able to help others in a tangible way.
George lived for many years in Montclair, NJ, and Bridgehampton, NY, where he and his first wife, Patience Halsey Sherman, raised their three children. Many of his life-long friendships were developed in those communities. Since 2004 George has lived in Greenwich, CT. with his wife, Sue Ann Massey Williamson. He was an active member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church where he was treasurer for three years, and he especially enjoyed being a part of their magnificent choir. During their summers George and Sue Ann gathered family and friends together in the Adirondacks. Until 2 ½ weeks ago George could be found every morning at six a.m. in the Fitness Center, an important part of his regimen in his battle against pancreatic cancer.
George was an honored family patriarch to his many nieces and nephews from the extended Williamson clan. His 94-year-old mother, Martha, of Sun City, AZ preceded him in death earlier the same day.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 7th at 2:00pm at St. Barnabas Church in Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the music program at St. Barnabas Church or to the Home Hospice program at Greenwich Hospital.

I was deeply saddened to hear of George and Martha's passing. I grew-up across the street from the Willamson family, and they were such wonderful neighbors. My two sisters, Jowellyn & Kathleen, and my brother, Bill, and I, as well as my parents, Bill & Leola Franck, shared so many good times with Martha, John, Johnny, & George throughout the 1950's and 60's on 24th Avenue in Rock Island, Illinois. George was over at our house so much that he was like a brother to us, cooking (and "eating"!) homemade fudge and cookies with us, climbing the apple tree with us in the front yard, and sharing family picnics together.

Over the years, we kept in contact. His visit with our family in Germany in 1987 was so much fun, as well as our return visit with him in London for 2 weeks in August of 1988. We also have fond memories of visiting him in New York City in 2003 to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and eating his homemade soup in his apartment there, and having breakfast with him in Grand Central Station Terminal.

Even as a young boy growing-up, George was always kind, caring, & thoughtful, and he remained so down through the years.

I remember with admiration how his mother, Martha, went back to college in her 40's and became a nurse. You didn't see many women doing that in the 1950's! Martha always had a gentle, dignified way about her.

Both George & Martha were so smart and intelligent. George would help me with my MATH homework (even though I was several years AHEAD of him in school), and while I was struggling through the math "word/thought problems", he had already calculated the answers in his head without pencil or paper!

I would see Martha spend many hours working in her garden when I was young. What a blessing from God that she passed only a few hours before George ON THE SAME DAY! I feel certain that she was waiting for him on "The Other Side", and took his hand as they walked together into God's heavenly garden.

We will miss you both, and we will always "treasure" our fond memories of you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Sue Ann, and all of your loved ones and family members at this time.

Lovingly,
Susan (Franck), John, & Clare Clifford

Our family grew up across the street from Martha, John, Johnny and George in Rock Island, Illinois. They were the best neighbors, so disciplined, yet non-judgmental, very kind and caring of others.

Our families had so much fun together with so
many wonderful memories over the years!

We will all miss George so much; even as a child he was thoughtful, compassionate and fun to be around. He would always show up at our door when we made chocolate brownies or fudge. And he was so gentle
he could never discipline their first dog Penny when she was bad. I hope he and Martha slid through Heaven's Gate together.

My love and prayers go out to Sue Ann and both families,

Sad news to learn of my brother in law, George's death. My children grew up with their Uncle George as a presence in their lives during many family occasions in New Jersey, as well as Southampton and Bridgehampton, New York often eating dinners, boating, sitting in hot tubs or at the beach. We have fond memories of those glory days. Also we will miss Martha, George' proud mother. My heart goes out to my sister Patience, the cousins Jesse, Tom, and Emily, George's second wife Sue Ellen and her children and the rest of the Williamson Family.

Uncle George will forever be in our hearts. During his last visit, he made time to toss the frisbee with Johnny and me and as always, he brought me some new music he thought I might enjoy. Grandma Martha and Uncle George set a high standard and we will remember them every day. Love to all

Dear Uncle George,
You will forever be a part of my heart. You helped raise me, loved me unconditionally, and within the last few years showed this same care for my children. Words can not express the void you will be leaving behind. You will forever be remembered as my invincible uncle.

I am so blessed to have had George as both a beloved father-in-law and a dear friend, one with a voracious interest in anything and everything -- in life itself, and especially in his family, most of all the three wonderful children of whom he was so deservedly proud. I am so glad I got to know him and that we had the time together we did.
Much love,

We have so many wonderful memories of time spent with George, his family and friends. We raised children and we "raised the roof" of that Montclair house that saw many memorable new year's eve parties.
George shared his home with us in New Jersey, Bridgehampton and London. Always giving and caring, George could be full of surprises. The decision to leave his primary profession to become a physical therapist was a challenge but allowed him the opportunity to directly help people.
We mourn his passing and extend our sympathy to Sue Ann, his children, Patience and his extended family.

George was the first guy I met when I moved to New York in 1975; we were sales partners at Chase. Although we only worked together for a year or so, we be came great friends as neighbors, commuter buddies, golfing and fishing pals. He was the most loyal, loving and caring friend. I have so many wonderful, touching and funny memories of George that I will cherish for the rest of my life. My heart goes out to his wonderful wife, Sue Ann, a treasure, and to Emily, Tommy, and Jesse, his children of whom he was so proud, and his step daughters Lee and Vaughn, whom he loved very much. I will miss him sooooo much.
