Hillestad, Hallvard J. (Hal), aged 88 of Fort Salonga New York and Pompano Beach Florida passed away February 23, 2013. He was born January 9, 1925 in Bergen Norway to Ole and Erna (Hagerup) Hillestad and lived there until his early twenties. Hallvard immigrated to the US in 1951 and started his career as a shipbroker with American Overseas Shipbrokerage Inc at 17 Battery Pl in New York. His success led him to start his own business American Overseas Chartering Inc. in the 1970s which he continued until his retirement in 1995. In 1958 he married Louise C. Gram-Knutsen of Bergen Norway and was faithfully by her side until her death January 5, 2013. Hallvard loved puttering around the house, fixing things, ballroom dancing and discussing politics and sports. He is survived by his two daughters, Elin Hillestad of Greenwich CT and Grethe Dahmen (Dirk) of Oberhausen Germany, three granddaughters, Jana Dahmen, Nina Dahmen and Rebecca Hillestad, as well as his nephews Alf-Ole (Sharon) Egeland and Thor (Kathleen) Egeland.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Riverside Connecticut on March 15, 2013 at 11AM. Burial will be private.
