Jeff Marshall Obituary

Marshall, Jeff
William Jefferson Marshall of Greenwich Connecticut, died December 27, 2012 at his sister's home in Sanibel, Florida from complications following a recent illness. He was 57. Mr. Marshall, a graduate of New York University and the Harvard Management Program, had worked with high growth technology companies for over 35 years. Most recently he served as a Board member for QuantumClean Technologies, Rotate Black Systems, and Quadrant 4 Technologies, having previously served as Chairman and Chief Executive of Green Earth Technologies. From 2006 to 2008, Mr. Marshall served as Managing Partner of CRT Private Equity, the private equity investment arm of CRT Capital Group which absorbed RockRidge Capital Partners a hedge fund and private equity firm, of which Mr. Marshall was Co-Founder. Prior to that, Mr. Marshall was the Senior Managing Partner at Vantage Point Venture Partners and Senior Managing Director of the Communications Technologies Group at Bear Stearns. Before moving to Bear Stearns, Mr. Marshall spent 10 years at MCI Communications, Inc. He served on many public and private Boards. Jeff Marshall worked hard, and played even harder. He loved shooting, riding, sailing, skiing, fishing, windsurfing and most of all flying airplanes. One of his fondest memories was taking his young daughter, Wylly, hopping across the US in a small yellow Piper Cub flying low and teaching her to read maps and the land. He was immensely proud of his legacy as a third generation American pilot. He was also a member of the New York Yacht Club, Belle Haven Yacht Club, Greenwich, Ct and Campfire Club, Chappaqua, NY. Mr. Marshall was born in Evanston, Illinois, and grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. He attended Eaglebrook School and Berkshire School. Jeff was married to Erika Travers Marshall with whom he had two daughters, Wylly Travers Marshall, of Dallas, Texas and Virginia Kirk Marshall, of Naples, Florida. He was also married to Janine Marshall with whom he had a third daughter, Langley Marion Marshall, of Greenwich, Connecticut. Both marriages ended in divorce.
In early 2012, Mr. Marshall was reunited with Mary Stuart Crane Tilt, his first sweetheart, also of Greenwich, who cared for him until his death. They had planned to marry later this year. Along with his three daughters, Mr. Marshall leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Peter and Mallory (Marshall) Haffenreffer of Portland, Maine. A celebration of his life will be held at Belle Haven Yacht Club, Greenwich, CT. Burial will be private.

I had learned of Jeff's untimely passing about a year ago. I had not spoken to Jeff for a number of years. We had gone different ways and using Google I was attempting to find what company (or in Jeff's case it was always companies) he was currently leading. I was so shocked that he had passed away. I met Jeff when I was a young man starting work at Bear Stearns. He was charismatic and a natural leader. He also was somebody in the world of Wall Street who was not only helpful but a natural teacher. I ultimately left Bear and went on to start a technology company (which Jeff was instrumental not just in terms of advice but helping me get funding.). He became one of our first major customers and ultimately Bear became one of our Bankers. We talked about family and our daughters. He was a bright light. Funny yet kind. Whenever I would call him for advice he was there, but God forbid you started to complain about anything because he would set you straight rather quickly. Jeff is also one of those people that everyone who was lucky enough to know him has a Jeff story. You take care Jeff. I am sure you are advising the almighty on what startup companies to bestow blessings on.

Having been out of touch with Jeff for a while, I just learned of this very sad news. For the few years Jeff ventured into yacht ownership, we had a good run. From NY to the Florida Keys, many good times were had aboard Quanalao. Im gonna miss you my friend...your captain.

Jeff gave me my first (two) job(s) when I got out of the Navy. Jeff flew me to my future father in laws' when asked for my wive's hand in marriage. Jeff and Erika brought me gallons of Gatorade when I was TU with food poisoning. We laughed, we partied, we hunted, we flew...Jeff was a very good friend who was always there. I do, and always will, miss him.

Great memories of our days as young bucks at MCI in the City.
I was in Manhattan 3 weeks ago, walking around I thought about the old MCI team at the JC Penney building.
You will be missed.

I met Jeff at Berkshire School when we were both sweet young things (age 15, and was he ever good-looking!). Jeff always looked forward, driven by a super-charged passion -whether it be building a company, flying a plane fast, or loving his girls as well as he could. I did not see Jeff often, but I always felt that if I got into trouble, I could call him. He was that type of friend, and I will miss him.

I am a childhood friend of Jeff's from Evanston, Illinois. Our sisters were best friends and I spent many hours in the Marshall home. Jeff Marshall was devastatingly handsome and fun from the age of 14 on, and I'm not surprised that he continued on to love flying and all types of adventure. The Byrne family sends our sympathies and thoughts to Mallory Kirk Marshall, and Jeff's family. May the best of his spirit live on in your memories, and may Jeff have open skies from now on.

Jeff was always a visionary. I remember working for him at Bear Stearns, and I was never more impressed by someone in upper management in terms of how he saw the overall picture.

I was a consulting Engr. at Bear-Stearns, remember putting together a solar charging battery system for the flight with his daughter to keep the radio going. He was always gracious to deal with, we will miss him. Also did many projects for him including the phones at Vantage Point.

Jeff and I have been friends for over 25 years. As someone that stayed in touch over the past few years, it was clear that Jeff was not himself and I hope that he is at peace. To his family, you have lost someone that was one of a kind and a very special person. I will think of him often and am certainly going to miss him.

To everyone who knew Jeff

I have many warm memories of myself,Paul Keeler, and Rick Hanna working at MCI in NYC in the late 1970's and 80's. We particularly enjoyed celebratory times in the Bar Car of the train after a strong month of sales against our arch rivals AT&T.

Years later. Jeff's daughters would play at with my three daughters at Todds Point in Greenwich when they were small...all beautiful blonds.

If there was one outstanding personal trait of Jeff, I would be compelled to say he had truely A Heart of Gold.

God bless your family

I have so many wonderful memories of Jeff, beginning with our days at Berkshire School, then as housemates in Greenwich, and finally during occasional get-togethers with our wives and kids. Handsome, smart, warm-hearted, successful, Jeff was in so many ways larger than life. It just doesn't seem possible that he's gone. He was such a dear friend. I shall miss him.
