Richard Holleran Obituary

RICHARD PAUL HOLLERAN, a long time resident of Milbank Avenue in Greenwich and of Berlin, Germany, died June 18, 2012 at the age of 77 at the Greenwich Hospital. Richard was the son of Francis Joseph and Helen Ruppert Silleck Holleran of Deer Park, Greenwich and the grandson of Henry Garrison and Amanda Ruppert Silleck of Calhoun Drive, Greenwich. He attended Greenwich Country Day School and graduated from St. George's School, Middletown, Rhode Island. Following study at Harvard College and Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, and the Free University in Berlin, Germany. he graduated from Berlin's Technical University with a master brewer's degree, continuing a family tradition on his maternal side. He worked for the U.S. State Department as a German interpreter for visiting dignitaries. Richard was a vocal proponent of preserving architecturally significant buildings, among them in New York Pennsylvania Station and the Metropolitan Opera House and in Greenwich the Rosensteel estate, the former Greenwich Town Hall Annex, the YMCA, and the Byram Firehouse. He married Katherine Gayle Jones (Mrs. Christopher Baring) on September 17, 1988. That marriage ended in divorce. For many years he was a member of the New York Harvard Club and served for two decades on Greenwich's Representative Town Meeting. He is survived by his sister Glenna (Mrs. Philip Ottley) of Sun Valley, Idaho and Hobe Sound, Florida and his brother Romer (who is married to the former Deming Pratt) of Vero Beach, Florida and Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is also survived by six nieces and one nephew. In accordance with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
