Boyer, Robert E.
Robert Ellis Boyer, 89, of York Township, and formerly of Greenwich, Connecticut, passed away on February 14, 2014 at Manor Care South with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Shaw) Boyer for 66 years. Robert was born in York, Pennsylvania on February 3, 1925 and was the son of the late Ellis C. and Cornelia K. (Spangler) Boyer. A 1943 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, Robert was a Staff Sergeant with the Fifth Army Headquarters during WWII in North Africa and Italy, serving as a Chaplain's Assistant from March 1944 through January 1946. A special memory of that time was having played the organ for the Christmas Eve service at the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (II Duomo) in Florence, Italy. Robert received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organ Performance and Music Theory from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, a Master of Education degree from New York University, and pursued his sixth-year studies at Manhattanville College (NY) and Fairfield University (CT). He taught music theory and choral singing for 28 years at Mamaroneck Junior High and Hommocks Middle School in Westchester County, NY. He served as a judge in many music competitions and parades throughout New York and Connecticut. An accomplished church musician, Robert began his career as a church organist at the age of 17, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in York. He was Minister of Music at the Southport Congregational Church in Connecticut for over 30 years. Upon returning to York in 1983, Robert served as a substitute organist at various local churches, including Bethlehem United Methodist (York) for 11 years. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross in Greenwich, Connecticut, and was an eight gallon blood donor. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by a daughter, Pamela Myers and her husband, Kit of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania; two sons, R. Eric Boyer and fiancée, Renae Fowler of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Philip J. Boyer and wife, Maryann of Stamford, Connecticut; his four grandchildren, Laura Boyer of Norwalk, Connecticut, Emily Boyer of Stamford, Connecticut, Joanna Myers of Glenside, Pennsylvania and Colin Myers of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania and special friend, Brandon Fowler, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and a sister, Joyce Eisenberger of York, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by a sister, Fern Wrights of York. Funeral services for Robert will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 22nd at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York, with his pastor, the Reverend Deborah Port of Longstown United Methodist Church, officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, 3101 Deininger Road, York, PA. Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, Inc., 849 East Market Street, York is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Longstown United Methodist Church, 2975 Carol Road, York, PA 17402 or to the National Parkinson's Foundation, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
