If you asked Sandra Svenson Pedersen to describe a perfect day, she would recount any of the days spent with her husband and family on their boat on Lake Erie. In her opinion, any day that involved her family, and especially her three grandchildren, was a perfect day.
Sandra's perfect days drew to a close on June 15, 2013 when she lost her battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at the age of 70. Her husband of nearly 49 years, Gary Pedersen, never left her side during the illness. They met in 4th grade at Julian Curtiss Elementary School in Greenwich, Connecticut but didn't fall in love until she graduated from Vermont College in 1963 and he was serving in the U.S. Navy. In addition to being partners in marriage, Sandra and Gary were partners in a successful business: three central Ohio NAPA auto parts stores, where she worked until the illness forced her retirement.
Born in 1943 in Detroit, Michigan to immigrant parents who are now deceased (Margaret Maloney from County Mayo, Ireland, and Walter Svenson from Sturkö, Sweden), Sandra and her younger brother Robert grew up in Greenwich. He was one of her devoted caregivers, making the trek from his home in Ocean View, Delaware to her home in Dublin, Ohio every six weeks.
Sandra gave her family every ounce of herself, and like her husband Gary, she made her children and grandchildren the top priority. Sandra is survived by their daughter, Debra Pedersen Young of Worthington, Ohio (husband Mike and children Trevor and Vanessa) and their son, Todd Pedersen of Upper Arlington, Ohio (wife Melissa and daughter Tate). Sandra's family in Greenwich includes Gail Pedersen Telerico, husband Sam, and their son Sam, and Judy Pedersen Ferdinand and husband Bill.
A memorial service honoring Sandra's life will take place at 4 p.m. on June 19, 2013 at the Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 North High Street, Worthington, 43085. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the ALS Association in honor of Sandra by calling 614-273-2572 or by going to www.alsohio.org.
