Willard Heminway Obituary

Heminway Jr, Willard
Willard "Spike" Sands Heminway Jr., a long-time resident of Greenwich, Conn., died peacefully Wednesday, July 24th, at his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine, at the age of 79. A resident of Hobe Sound, Fla., Mr. Heminway had many passions but especially loved his family; golf and tennis; and reading. Born August 3, 1933, in Rye, N.Y., Mr. Heminway graduated in 1951 from The Taft School in Watertown, Conn., and in 1955 from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed mostly in Alaska. He was President of Heminway & Bartlett Manufacturing Company, which had been in his family for five generations. He was past president of the Round Hill Club in Greenwich, Conn., and past president of the United States Senior's Golf Association. He was well known for wearing colorful socks, a fashion trend adopted by his great friend, George H.W. Bush. The 41st president, when asked by a reporter about why he wore such outlandish socks, credited his good friend Spike for enhancing and broadening his sock portfolio. Mr. Heminway is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betsy Rowland Heminway; his daughter Alexandra Anderson and her husband John of Washington, D.C.; his beloved grandchildren, Jay and Bentley Anderson; his sister Betsy Dineen of Rye, N.Y., and many friends. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. November 7th at the Jupiter Island Chapel in Hobe Sound, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice of Southern Maine; The Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, Conn.; or the Jupiter Island Clinic in Hobe Sound., Fla. We are so sorry to learn of Spike's death. We were very privileged to meet Spike and Betsy in Florida and Bermuda on business related trips. Heyward enjoyed playing golf with both Spike and Betsy. We spent wonderful evenings having dinner together on those trips. We will never forget Spike or Betsy . Our thoughts are with Betsy and the family.
