Lilian Engebretson, a long time Greenwich resident, passed away peacefully on Friday August 1st.
Lilian (Lil) worked for the Greenwich Academy for 34 years in the administration and business development offices, before her retirement in 2006 . Lil was born , Lilian Roselea Genetelli, on May 5th, 1924, and grew up in New York City's Greenwich Village. Her first employment was with Fugazy Travel, an early leader in the travel business. Post WWII, Lil met Oliver Engebretson, also in the travel business. They married and moved to Greenwich in 1958, where they raised 4 children. They were divorced in the mid 70's. Lil continued to raise her 4 children in Greenwich, including her special needs son, Lee. Lil was a tireless advocate for Lee, at a time when special needs were still not well understood. Lil remained a resident of Greenwich, where she and Lee shared their home.
Lil is survived by her Brother, Robert, from Massachusetts, all 4 of her children, Bruce, who resides in Miami, Lee, who lives in Greenwich, Mark, who lives in New Jersey, and Julie, who also lives in Greenwich. Lil is also survived by her 6 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Second Congregational Church, in Greenwich, on August 14th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lilian's memory to the Greenwich Academy Scholarship Fund, 200 North Maple Avenue, Greenwich, CT 06830 with a notation in her honor for her 34 years of dedicated service.
