BRUCE NORTON LEFLER
Bruce Norton Lefler, 90, formerly of Green Valley, AZ, passed away Feb. 27, 2014 in Phoenix, AZ. Born in November 1923 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Herbert and Edna Lefler, Bruce graduated from Fort Dodge High School. An outstanding three sport athlete in football, track and wrestling, he was affectionately known as "swivel hips" on the football field. After serving in WWII
as an Army bombardier, Bruce completed his college education at Carlton College in Northfield, MN, with degrees in economics and philosophy. He married the late Ellowene Garlock in August 1946, and they raised three daughters together. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Bruce's professional career began at John Deere Plow Works in Moline, Ill., where he advanced to be a senior executive. He held similar positions with other industrial equipment companies in Waverly, Iowa and Indianapolis, Ind., before he and Ellowene retired to Green Valley, AZ in 1982. While in Green Valley, Bruce enjoyed participating in the Senior Olympic track competitions and won numerous medals. He was an avid fan of U. of Arizona basketball and Arizona Diamondback baseball. Bruce was actively involved in Valley Presbyterian Church and successfully completed the Stephens Ministry program to support others. Beginning in May of 1999, he lived and shared 12 happy years with Dianne Bigham, also of Green Valley, until becoming ill and moving to Phoenix.
He is survived by his three daughters: Nancy Lefler (Mickey White) Prescott, AZ; Ann Ostrom (Lanny Ostrom) Phoenix; and Louise Fowler (Roy Fowler) Pocatello, Idaho. He was blessed with six grandchildren: Anne Marie Hanna, Prescott, AZ; Andy White, Austin, TX; Ben Ostrom, Phoenix, AZ; Kurt Ostrom, Minneapolis, MN; Brett Fowler, Philadelphia, PA; and Katelin Fowler, Philadelphia, PA.
A celebration of life is pending at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are welcome in his name to support Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 S. Camino del Sol, Green Valley, AZ 85622.
